Machine Learning Scientist

full-time Babylon health London

Who are we?

We are a team on a mission, to put accessible and affordable healthcare in the hands of every person on earth. Our mission is bold and ambitious, and it’s one that’s shared by our team who epitomise our values, to dream big, build fast and be brilliant.

To achieve this, we’ve brought together one of the largest teams of scientists, clinicians, mathematicians and engineers to focus on combining the ever growing computing power of machines, with the best medical expertise of humans, to create a comprehensive, immediate and personalised health service and make it universally available.

babylon was included in WIRED’s 2016 Top 100 Hottest Startups in Europe and CB Insights 2017 Global ‘AI 100’ list. Fortune Magazine included babylon in their 2017 list of ‘50 Companies Leading the AI Revolution’, the only listed company using AI in healthcare delivery.

At babylon our people aren’t just part of a team, they’re part of something bigger. We’re a vibrant community of creative thinkers and doers, forging the way for a new generation of healthcare.

We’re only as good as our people. So finding the best people is everything to us. We serve millions, but we choose our people one at a time…

What do we want?

We are looking for a motivated and creative research scientist, who has experience of cutting-edge research in a mathematical discipline, and who can demonstrate a detailed and intuitive understanding of modern methods in machine learning and natural language processing. The candidate needs to be comfortable working both independently and in small teams, to prototype new models or services which could improve our platform. Babylon already uses state of the art ML techniques, including deep RNNs and distributed representations, and successful prototypes will be deployed in production to hundreds of thousands of users, supported by our machine learning engineers and software developers.

Reporting to the machine learning lead, you will be part of a collaborative and growing AI team based in our central London office. You will be working alongside amazing scientists and engineers, and also interacting closely with experienced clinical staff to solve real problems.

A candidate for this role will have research experience in a mathematical discipline, and be able to demonstrate a solid conceptual understanding of deep learning techniques such as Convolutional and Recurrent neural networks, distributed representations such as Word2Vec, and new innovations like “attention”. Most important to us is that the candidate shows a strong interest in the field of machine learning with the goal to have practical impact, and the ability to quickly adapt to new techniques and technologies.

We have a team of the best people you’d ever hope to meet, all passionate about both healthcare and AI. We like people who are smart, creative and highly motivated to deliver the best possible service to the users of babylon.

Who fits the role?

  • Research scientist, with a superb understanding of machine learning methods, and a proven ability to be creative in a mathematical discipline.
  • Solid programming skills in Python, and experience with at least one deep learning toolkit such as TensorFlow, Theano, Torch or Keras, as well as numpy and Sci-kit learn.
  • A natural team player, who enjoys working collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Flexible and adaptable, with a “can do” approach and solid problem-solving skills.
  • Excited about building real practical products that can be deployed to production.
  • Organized and pro-active, with strong attention to detail.
  • MSc or PhD in Computer Science / Statistics / Mathematics / Physics or other quantitative discipline, or equivalent experience in industry.
  • Demonstrated statistical and machine learning experience, academic or commercial, and knowledge of major data science tools and frameworks.
  • Strong coding skills in Python. Knowledge of other languages is optional but valuable (e.g. Java/Lua/C++).
  • The ability to create new mathematical approaches to solve difficult problems.
  • Great organizational skills with the ability to thrive in a demanding environment whilst juggling multiple priorities.
  • A highly motivated self-starter with a can-do attitude, even in the face of demanding deadlines.
