What youll be doing

Youll be the first dedicated engineer in our team to provide operational support to the engineering team and help improve how Mention Me delivers our products globally, 24/7/365.

The four key areas youll be focussed on are:

  • Improving how we deliver software to production as a team, e.g. innovating on release tools or how we manage our infrastructure
  • Identifying opportunities for improvements throughout our public facing product, e.g. finding improvements in MySQL queries, helping ensure a new feature is ready to scale or reducing our infrastructure costs
  • Proactively identify and address risks and opportunities, e.g. security concerns, within our platform
  • Engaging in troubleshooting and support when issues arise

The role available will benefit someone who is self motivated, has a strong desire to learn more and has a high attention to detail.

Youll be working on our existing tech stack, which is a Symfony 2 application deployed on AWS. We deploy multiple times per week using a combination of Jenkins (code), Saltstack (configuration) and Terraform (infrastructure) - and as our team grows we expect the volume of deployments to increase rapidly. Automation is key to our success and reliability so far, and we expect you to build on and improve this.

As Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is a new discipline at Mention Me youll work closely with the Head of Engineering to take on responsibility of the core platform. Youll also work closely with our CTO to ensure the security and reliability of our platform, including maintaining our ISO27001 accreditation and GDPR compliance. This may include defining processes or procedures, implementing new technologies or conducting detailed system diagnosis to get to the root of a problem.

About you

You are a software engineering pro and you love seeing your technology running. You are happiest fine tuning the engine that powers the business - even though most of your work goes unseen. You understand the complexities of the stack and strive to improve things with high quality code, great testing and you get a kick out of doing things right. You like to move fast, but not so fast youre breaking things on a Friday night.

You are an intelligent and first rate problem solver. You solve problems in order of business value and you know technical and business perfection are often competing goals. You have designed applications with production-strength, high traffic architectures and have an appreciation for complicated SaaS platforms with high availability. Security is always on of your mind and youll strive to ensure your clients data is protected.

Ideally, youll have experience in AWS or another cloud platform. Youre at home on the command line and are happy with all the tools of a modern fast paced software development environment. Automation tools like Saltstack, Terraform, Jenkins and Git are tools you cant live without - and you certainly cant manage without great monitoring and logging like the ELK stack and Prometheus/Grafana.

You are looking for a role where you can get involved in major product and technology decisions from the get-go, and help grow our small business into a major online marketing business. Our future is as yet unwritten, and wed welcome your skills and expertise in helping to write it.

  • At minimum a highly accomplished undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Maths or a related discipline
  • Ideally youll have strong experience in at least one of Systems Administration, Distributed Systems, Databases and Cloud Computing, or related disciplines
